Hey Joe

(a) If your hearth was not cut into sections and slabbed the it will almost certainly crack in time if you are using it with a solid fuel fire

(b) Granite is not dense enough (strong) to withstand the heat from solid fuel fires. This means there will be no where for the heat to disperse and in most cases this will eventually lead to a crack

(c) The hearth must also be bedded on a sand and cement base

hi my black granite hearth was not cut into sections or slabbed. it is 66 inches wide. Is there any material i can put under a coal fire eg. cement blocks or bricks to prevent the black granite from cracking ? your help would be appreciated.
Many thanks

Hello Harvy

A suitable non combustible material would be something that is fire resistant

* Some fitters would use tile adhesive to stick the back panel to the wall

* The most common alternative if it is a really deep recess is to perhaps use sand & cement to fill the void between the back of the wall and the fireplace back panel. This is the cheapest method as well

Hope this helps

Hi,

I have a builder working for me and need him to make a fireplace, the new frie surround we purchased has a large rebate as mentioned above, what is a suitable non-conbustable material to fill this void with?

I have not seen any sites other than yours which mention this, however nobody appears to mention exactly what materal to use?

Thanks
